- Season: 1 Episode: 22 : One Tree Hill: The Games That Play Us
- By:
The playoffs are approaching and Nathan and Lucas are still practicing together. They even pay a visit to Coach Whitey, who can't help but feel stunned by their togetherness. Before heading for the hospital, he has some parting words: "You boys play with your whole hearts. You take your shots, no regrets."
After trying to convince Deb he has always wanted to do the right thing for their family, Dan threatens Haley: she had better stay away from Nathan. Later, Lucas comes by Dan's office: he wants to let him know he appreciates that he tried to get joint custody.
Meanwhile, Nathan is clearly worried about the whole argument he and Haley had, so he catches up with her, proclaiming his love for her. They make up. Someone else isn't having such an easy time. Keith confronts Karen and tells her he wants to leave Tree Hill because even being in the same town as her is making it impossible for him to move on.
Elsewhere, Nicki and Brooke are plotting evil deeds: Brooke will use their newly mended friendship to convince Peyton to reveal Jake's whereabouts so Nicki can go after them.
Karen is upset that Lucas plans to leave Tree Hill, but he doesn't seem eager to change his mind. Unfortunately, it's time that Haley learns the truth too. She isn't enthusiastic: "Who's going to buy bad music or lie to the campus lost and found and claim dumb stuff?". Lucas assures her they'll keep on being best friends, as usual.
The playoffs arrive and, of course, Dan is always sweeter: "If you win, you're one step closer to a state championship, an undefeated season, and greatness. Lose, and be losers." Not surprisingly, the game isn't their best ever, and the Ravens lose after Lucas' injured shoulder causes him to miss the final basket.
Lucas and Keith are ready to leave the next morning. Lucas goes to visit Whitey, thanking him for believing in his talent. After, he greets Karen, who reminds him Tree Hill will be his home forever, and Nathan, who claims he's actually going to miss him. My, how things have changed. And, luckily, it turns out that Brooke never planned to reveal Jake's actual whereabouts to Nicki. Instead she lies to the psycho-stalker, making up that Jake and Jenny are in Seattle and sending her on a cross-country wild goose chase.
Back at the hospital there is bad news for Whitey: his medical condition is definitely worse than expected. He worries about what this will mean for the Ravens and his ability to return as their coach.
Meanwhile, Dan shows up at Deb's, and finds her and Keith in a horizontal clinch. Keith wants to explain what happened, but Dan tells him he's not his brother anymore. Then, right while he is signing divorce papers, he suffers a massive heart attack.
The next morning, Peyton and Brooke's renewed friendship is blossoming. A mysterious letter is waiting for them, though. Lucas stops by Nathan's in order to say goodbye to Haley. Actually, Nathan and Haley have big news: they just got married. Lucas is beyond stunned and the last scene we see is him and Keith driving away, an expression of shock and disappointment marring the younger Scott's face.
